Winbook TW802 Review: A Budget Windows Tablet Done Right

I’ve been with Android since Android 1.5 and was always a big fan of how I had endless possibilities when it comes to Android, Android made the tinkerer in me happy.
Recently my Nook HD with Cyanogenmod started struggling with all the new apps installed on it and I knew it was time for me to move on so I tried replacing it with a Google Nexus 7 but that didn’t go too well.
I had this misconception that Windows tablets were more than I can afford and that they will not be as useful as an Android tablet, subsequently I didn’t follow up on news about new Windows tablets until I stumbled upon some posts on reddit talking about Windows tablets and that’s when I started my research.
As always when trying new technology I go with the cheapest option I can find in order to test it out
and to see if the software would be suitable for my needs or not. At the same time I had some features that I was expecting.
My research lead me to Microcenter’s Winbook TW802 The Winbook TW802 is a feature full tablet running the latest Windows 8.1 and comes with a free full year subscription to Microsoft Office 365.
With the price tag of $100 and $5 for shipping I couldn’t resist and went ahead and got it, I’ve been using the tablet for about 2 weeks now and here’s what I like and hate about the tablet:

1- HD IPS LCD 8″ 1280×800 Display: 1280×800 squeezed into a small 8″ screen is sharp and clear, with the price tag I was expecting a cheap screen but I was wrong.
2- Full sized USB port: it’s not like a USB C port and it only supports USB 2.0 but this is one of the features I wasn’t going to do without on a Windows operating system, talk about endless possibilities this is the best it can get connecting a mouse, keyboard, external HDD you name it.
3- Micro HDMI port: I didn’t think I needed it until I got the tablet and connected it to my TV
4- Battery life is very decent, connected to a lot of peripherals my Tablet can last for more than 3 days
5- Micro SD card slot: more portable storage, although 32 GB internal storage is more than I needed for a tablet since I run most of my media from my Plex server.
6- Front and back Cameras are good enough for a tablet, the front camera is better than the front camera of my Moto x 1st gen.
1- 8″ screen is not the best with a Windows tablet, some tasks are not very finger-friendly, not even stylus friendly. Something like hitting the close (X) button on the screen is part of mission impossible, it would’ve been much better if it was a 10″ screen but for a budget tablet I’m more than satisfied with 8″.
2- The Winbook TW802 is not so popular which means you’ll have to spend $30 to buy a case for a budget tablet which is worth $100 or you can just buy a universal case that won’t fit perfectly (which is the option I chose)
3- The micro USB charging cord that comes with the tablet is very short but then again there are plenty of cords you can buy for practically nothing.

The Motorcycle Helmet That Uses Google Glass

This past year, Skully helmets introduced their innovative AR-1 Helmet. While many people would not give a motorcycle helmet a second glance, you might want to look a little closer at this one…
The Skully AR-1’s main features:
            -Rear Facing Camera
-Google glass style screen in your field of view
            -Proprietary turn-by-turn navigation.

Motorbike helmet google glass riding
The most thrilling feature undoubtedly is the rear facing camera with Google glass style screen. This allows the rider to have a 360-degree field of vision while riding. This will greatly increase the rider’s awareness, and provide them with an incredibly simple way to see everything going on around them.
Skully has hid many of their ugly “tech stuff” in the rear spoiler of the helmet. This adds a bit of flare, without making it painfully obvious that underneath that spoiler there are wires and circuit boards.

The Cube:
The cube is what makes this helmet truly unique. It moves forward and backward, and swivels so that you can adjust it for a customized viewing angle. The actual size of the screen is smaller than what you see in the video, according to Skully, they just presented it that way to give future users a glimpse of its capabilities.

The Face Shield:
This is easily the second most notable feature that Skully threw into this helmet. Many motorcycle riders struggle with whether or not they should use a tinted visor for riding in the sun, or a clear visor in case they get caught riding at night. Many motorcycle riders are forced to carry around two face shields to combat this issue. Skully has given them a better solution. The face shield on the AR-1 uses electro chromatic liquid crystal technology, dubbed “e-tint” which has only just recently been put to commercial use. Essentially what it does is allow the rider to switch from a clear face shield, to an smoke shield at the push of a button utilizing liquid crystals.
While this helmet is out of the realm of possibility for most riders, coming in at a steep $1299, it provides a glimmer of hope that helmets of the future will provide more than just protection in the event of a collision,; but actually have preventative measures included in the design to keep riders safe.

The Switch From Android To Iphone And The Switch Back

Iphone, Android, Moto X, Moto G, Apple

A week ago I realized that as much as I love my Motorola Moto G, it was still getting a bit sluggish.
I noticed that when I was in my car playing music through Spotify, I got lost and decided to use Google maps and that's when my Moto G decided it can't handle and it killed Spotify to handle Google maps.

I started taking a look in the market and with so many options available I got confused and came to the conclusion that it's time to try something different, it was the time to give Iphones a shot.
For those who know me, I have been an Android enthusiast since Android 1.5 and my hate for Iphones started with the first Iphone ever, at that point I used to say that my HTC Kjam running windows mobile was much smarter than an Iphone.

I didn't want to invest a ton of money in an experiment that I knew beforehand wouldn't continue for a long time so I went out and got an Iphone 4S 32 GB from craigslist and decided that if I like it I would then go and buy an Iphone 6.
I updated the Iphone 4S to IOS 8.1.3

After one week of usage I present to you the results of my experiment.

Here's what I liked about my Iphone:

1- Siri is much more smarter than Google now or any other voice assistant on Android.
2- Even though the iphone 4S is a few generations back, it's still receiving updates from Apple, unlike my Moto G which I have been waiting for a lollipop update since I got it.
3- The switch from Android to Iphone wasn't so hard, synching contacts from Google contacts to Iphone wasn't so hard.

Here's what I hated about My Iphone:

1- No delivery reports for text messages, a feature that is available in the Nokia 3210 I owned 10 years ago
2- Sharing options are not integrated in all the apps, for example I wanted to share a page from safari to whatsapp, I was surprised there's no way to do it on an Iphone except the old fashioned copy and paste
3- I missed widgets so much, even though Iphones now have widgets in the notification area but it supports very few of my apps (Mint widget for example is not available on Iphones)
4- The notification drawer on Iphones was definitely inspired by Android, however it sucks.
it looks like a cheap Chinese copy of a premium product
4- Dropbox doesn't synchronize camera photos until opened, it doesn't run in the background like in Androids
5- Trying to change my ringtones took my more than 30 minutes of reading online guides on how to cut my files on Itunes and how to set up the ringtone on Itunes.
6- Itunes itself is a stupid idea, even though Iphones now run more or less independently from Itunes, they still depend on it for a lot of features which is stupid
7- Most of the apps I'm used to on Android are paid apps on Iphone which explains why people spend more money buying apps from the appstore than Google play store.
8- Tasker is not available for Iphone and never will be

And sure as I expected after one week I decided to go back to Android.
I settled on the Motorola Moto X and sold my Iphone.

How tо Gеt Trаvеl Insurance

Travel insurance, travel, cheap travel

Whіlе thе wоrld has bееn spinning since thе beginning оf tіmе, mоdеrn lіfе has mаdе оur lіvеѕ more аnd mоrе mоbіlе. Aside from rеѕеrvіng уоur ticket аnd расkіng your bags, another іmроrtаnt issue to соnѕіdеr іѕ whеthеr уоu'll nееd to tаkе оut trаvеl іnѕurаnсе. Here are some tips tо make thе рrосеѕѕ аѕ ѕmооth аѕ a flight through thе skies оr a sail асrоѕѕ thе ѕеаѕ:

1. Learn if you need travel insurance.

Whіlе іt'ѕ hіghlу аdvіѕаblе to tаkе out trаvеl іnѕurаnсе during lengthy trірѕ, you might асtuаllу аlrеаdу bе соvеrеd via уоur еxіѕtіng роlісіеѕ. It gоеѕ wіthоut saying thаt it wоuldn't bе tоо logical to tаkе out insurance whеn you're already covered!

2. Dеtеrmіnе which tуре of іnѕurаnсе you'd need.

Not all travel insurance іѕ the ѕаmе. Sо соnѕіdеr fасtоrѕ ѕuсh аѕ where you'll bе going and hоw уоu'll get thеrе, to fіgurе оut еxасtlу whісh tуре оf insurance уоu'd nееd to ѕесurе. For іnѕtаnсе, if you have any hеаlth issues, thеn уоu ѕhоuld definitely соnѕіdеr tаkіng оut mеdісаl travel іnѕurаnсе (уоu ѕhоuld probably do іt anyways since mеdісаl emergencies саn hарреn at аnу time). This еmеrgеnсу mеdісаl іnѕurаnсе is bеnеfісіаl nоt оnlу аftеr уоu аrrіvе at уоur dеѕtіnаtіоn, but also durіng уоur travel thеrе. Aссіdеntѕ саn hарреn at any tіmе, whеthеr уоu'rе driving, sailing, or flying. One tуре оf іnѕurаnсе thаt'ѕ раrtісulаrlу useful іn mоdеrn tіmеѕ іѕ tеrrоrіѕm insurance. Cеrtаіn аrеаѕ of thе wоrld, such as certain росkеtѕ of the Middle East, tеnd tо be particularly volatile. So it's bеttеr tо be safe thаn sorry whеn trаvеlіng to thоѕе regions.

3. Ensure that уоu'll have ассеѕѕ tо a 24-hour hоtlіnе.

Aссіdеntѕ саn happen аt аnу time, whіlе you're traveling to уоur dеѕtіnаtіоn оr ѕреndіng tіmе there. Thаt'ѕ why уоu should vеrіfу that a сеrtаіn policy рrоvіdеѕ you with ассеѕѕ tо аn around-the-clock hоtlіnе. While this ѕеrvісе may mеаn more fееѕ tасkеd оntо thе роlісу'ѕ рrісе, іt wіll definitely be wоrthwhіlе іn the lоng run. Fоllоw the Bоу Sсоut'ѕ mantra аnd "Bе prepared".

4. Lеаrn whаt thе роlісу covers.

Whіlе thіѕ mау ѕееm to state the оbvіоuѕ, іt'ѕ еxtrеmеlу іmроrtаnt. Yоu dеfіnіtеlу wаnt tо avoid getting into аn ассіdеnt whіlе traveling abroad, and thеn discovering thаt уоur travel іnѕurаnсе policy didn't соvеr you іn thаt ѕіtuаtіоn. Also, mаkе sure tо read thе fіnе рrіnt bеfоrе ѕіgnіng оn thе dоttеd line. Yоu might аlѕо have a lаwуеr "translate" аnу раrtѕ of the policy that seem lіkе Grееk to you.

5. Shор аrоund for travel insurance.

Aѕ wіth tаkіng оut аnу оthеr tуре of insurance, get рlеntу оf estimates bеfоrе deciding on a раrtісulаr policy. A mіnіmum оf thrее іѕ аdvіѕаblе, tо help ensure thаt you're gеttіng thе best deal. Shоuld you ѕеаrсh оnlіnе оr offline? Thе answer іѕ: bоth! Whіlе huntіng for trаvеl insurance online іѕ faster and more соnvеnіеnt, уоu саn ѕtіll find ѕоmе ѕоlіd dеаlѕ through offline sources. Whеn trаvеlіng abroad, travel іnѕurаnсе wіll hеlр to give you реасе of mіnd untіl уоu'rе safe аnd ѕоund аt hоmе. Aссіdеntѕ саn hарреn аt anytime, so mаkе ѕurе that уоu'rе соvеrеd аll the tіmе!

Here's Why I Abandoned My Nexus 7 For A Nook HD

Nook HD, Nook, Nexus 7, Google, Android, Barnes and noble, Nexus in dash, in dash car

I've owned a Nook HD tablet for some time now and couldn't be happier running cyanogemod. I even wrote a guide on how to install cyanogemod on the Nook HD.

A few days ago I bought a Nexus 7 2012 to replace my Nook mainly because I wanted to install it in my car as an in dash entertainment system and I needed a tablet that features GPS (which the Nook HD lacks)

If I were a normal user who didn't have a Nook HD i would have been very happy with my purchase but because I'm not, I was unsatisfied with the overall performance of the tablet.

Here are the points where the Nook HD excels over Nexus 7:

  1.  Even though the Nexus 7 has a stronger processor (quad core compared to the dual core on the Nook HD), the Nook certainly performs much better and is smoother, I'm not talking about quadrant score or numbers I'm talking about the user experience.
  2. My Nook has a memory card slot.
  3. Nook HD features a much better screen resolution @ 243 PPI VS. the Nexus 7 2012 @ 216 PPI.

There is also a lot of stuff that annoy me in the Nook HD:

  1. No micro USB port makes it hard to connect it with OTG or different chargers
  2. No GPS
  3. No Cameras

After using the nexus 7 for a few days I decided I don't like it, especially after upgrading to Lollipop the tablet became so sluggish as reported by a lot of users and lost any advantage it had over my lovely Nook HD.

I know that both of these tablets are old, but I don't see a point in spending more money on a new tablet when I can get a Nook HD that matches the performance for only $60.
